APPLICATION FOR ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP BY RESIDENCE

Foreign citizen legally and continuously resident in Italy for a period of:

  • 10 years of residency for non-EU citizens

  • 4 years of residence for European Union citizens

  • 5 years of residence for stateless persons (9 letter e) and political refugees (Holders of subsidiary and humanitarian protection status do not benefit from the concessions provided for refugees in terms of acquiring Italian citizenship and must have 10 years of residence.)

  • 5 years of residency following adoption for foreign adults adopted by Italian citizens

  • 5 years of residence for a foreign adult who is the child of a naturalized Italian citizen, following the naturalization of the parent

  • 3 years of residency for foreign adults who are descendants in a direct line up to the second degree of Italian citizens

  • 3 years of residence for foreign adults born in Italy who have not obtained, or have not been able to obtain, citizenship recognition from the municipality of residence

  • 5 years of service in the Italian State

For this type of request, an income requirement is required .

APPLICATION FOR ITALIAN CITIZENSHIP BY MARRIAGE/CIVIL UNION

It can be requested from the spouse/civil partner (foreign or stateless) of an Italian citizen when, after the marriage, he or she has resided legally and uninterruptedly in the territory of the Republic for at least two years, and the dissolution, annulment, or cessation of the civil effects of the marriage has not occurred, the spouses are not legally separated, and the will to dissolve the union has not been expressed.

For foreigners married to a naturalized Italian citizen, two years of uninterrupted legal residence begin after the date of the naturalized citizen's oath.

The two-year term is reduced by half in the presence of children born or adopted by the spouses.

There is no income requirement for this type of request .
